Robert Thomson discusses the challenges faced by journalism in a time of sweeping technological and cultural change, as seen from the editorial desk of one the world's oldest and most respected newspapers, The Times of London. He also offers advice for young journalists entering the profession.
About Robert Thomson:
Robert Thomson, editor of The Times of London, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from RMIT in 1990. He was appointed editor of The Times in March 2002 and, in 2003, converted the paper from broadsheet to compact format. Prior to joining The Times, Robert was Editor of the US edition of the Financial Times taking prime editorial responsibility for the FT Group’s ambitious drive into the US market. From 1994 to 1996, he was the FT’s Foreign News Editor in London, overseeing the paper’s extensive network of correspondents. He has been a journalist since early 1979, when he joined The Herald in Melbourne. He also worked for the Sydney Morning Herald. He is the author of The Judges: A Portrait of the Australian Judiciary (Allen & Unwin), co-author of The Chinese Army (Weldon Owen) and he edited a successful collection of humorous writing (True Fiction, published by Penguin Books).
